![]() ![]() 50% more, meaning strawberries gain much more from being planted on fertile soil. Both have 600,000 tick lifespans, however where Potatoes gain a 0.4 Fertility Factor Growth Rate, Strawberries get 0.6. Yes, Potatoes yield 4 units of food per fully grown plant. This is my understanding, with a little backing from the vanilla xmls. The whole Strawberries vs Potatoes discussion is more complicated then that. I had a visitor this alpha who went to melee attack and centipede and he ended up getting killed with a single blow from the centipede. But that was either fixed immediately in a hotfix or by the next alpha. When mechanoids were first introduced they couldn't melee attack. Though you can have a couple of people with low cooldown weapons kill them easily so long as they keep hitting it. They can, some of them, at least, and they pack a punch. I lost an entire colony once in alpha 6 to the advice that centipedes couldn't melee attack. QuoteI would advise caution on the melee attacking centipedes bit. You just forbid all the potatoes and let them eat berries. I'll have a large(ish) stockpile of Berries should I run out of meals mid-solar flare or mid-eclipse (I always turn off the stoves during exlipses to save some power). Early game I like to grow strawberries in case I don't get cooking or a nutrient paste dispenser up quick enough. Even if potatoes couldn't be eaten raw, how would that make them pointless? Eating raw plant food (including berries) is definitely not efficient, it has low nutrition so it's wasteful. The only reason to ever grow berries is that they don't lower morale when eaten raw, like all other raw foods (including potatoes) do. ![]() I'm not sure what you mean by "efficient." Potatoes have a higher yield, so growing them gives more food. Otherwise, strawberries are the only food-crop I ever grow. This means potatoes are effectively pointless, because they have to be cooked.ĭisclaimer: If potatoes grow better/faster year-round or can now be eaten raw, this is new information to me and this tip is moot. Potatoes on the other hand will not be eaten raw. Quote from: Rokdog on December 19, 2014, 03:05:30 PMĪn oldie but a goodie: The most efficient food-crop is strawberries, because they can be used as both meals and eaten as raw food. Unless you're at war with the whole world, don't worry about bringing supplies to build defenses around the ship - that's why you brought silver and gold, can trade for any heavy stuff like steel at the last couple friendly communities before you arrive.Quote from: Cimanyd on December 19, 2014, 04:41:54 PM If it's for the spaceship, and you think you can bring all your colonists aboard, plan for a one-way trip. There's no hazard in passing close to enemy communities as long as you don't actually try to enter them. Do make sure to save some hay for the animals if you have to cross deserts and colder regions. This way, you'll keep the caravan a bit lighter than if you'd try to pack 40 or so days of munchies, and travel faster. Plan the trip in stages and try to stop by friendly communities to buy food as you go. Packing food can be an issue, BUT packing silver and gold is a workaround. If they were well-adjusted individuals before, they should make the trip without any breakdowns. While colonists will suffer from lack of recreation, if I recall they're at very low expectations because they're away from any colony wealth. If you have to head toward a pole, save that for when that hemisphere will be in its spring so that you'll probably arrive in the warmest period. ![]() I've done a few cross-planet expeditions (100% world size), and in general if you pack enough food and vary your travel across whichever hemisphere's experiencing summer for your grazing animals you'll be fine, or just follow an equatorial route. ![]()
